Spike Wells, the tremendously inventive and propulsive drummer who played for many years with both Tubby Hayes and Bobby Wellins contributed a piece to Jazz Journal International's August 1978 edition. In it he highlighted the massive talent that Bobby Wellins possesses and also lamented the general public's lack of awareness of Bobby's music. Spike has
very generously given permission for me to reproduce the article, "Keeper
of the Flame", in full. Kenny Mathieson, the respected Scottish music reviewer, has sent me a selection of appreciations of Bobby's work which can be accessed here. My friend Ron Stables has dug out a review of "Live Jubilation" by Michael James which you can read here. Ian Watt 25 January 2000 |
